Categories: News

YWCA Sweetwater County is proud to announce that Melinda Baas will take over the Executive Director position recently vacated by Lauren Schoenfeld who has moved on to different opportunities. Melinda has worked at YWCA for the past 11 years.  She started as the Big Brothers Big Sister Director in 2007 leading the program until it became part of the Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters. Melinda then developed and ran the YWCA Financial Empowerment program starting in 2015 and has been providing financial education to our community since that time.

Melinda will be responsible for managing three YWCA programs; the Center for Families and Children, Financial Empowerment, and the Early Care and Learning Center, overseeing a total of 29 employees. She’ll work with the Board of Directors to direct YWCA operations and serve as the main public contact and spokesperson for the organization.

Baas has a Juris Doctorate degree in Law, a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, and a minor in Communications with a Theatre Emphasis.  Her employment includes many years of social work experience in both Michigan and Wyoming. Melinda brings a long history of working in the Domestic Violence Advocacy filed. She spent 3 years working as an Advocate in another Wyoming program, and served on the YWCA crisis line as a volunteer in the late 1990s.   Most recently Melinda taught the DV/SA Advocate Training both at the YWCA and Western Wyoming Community College. She has served on the Red Desert Humane Society Board for 8 of the last 10 years as both treasurer and now president.

Melinda and her husband have been married for 24 years and enjoy attending local fundraisers together as well as traveling, exploring new cultures, and spending time with their two dogs.

“Melinda has been great to work with, she has been a role model and always seems to have a solution to any problem the office comes across. I am looking forward to learning and working with her as the Executive Director.” – Kayla Mannikko Development Director.

Melinda’s first official day was December 17, 2018. Anticipate seeing Melinda throughout the community at public events and City Council meetings. Please take a moment to congratulate Melinda, as we are very excited to have her as our new Executive Director. She can be contacted at 307-352-6635 or Melinda@ywcasweetwater.org.
